FAQ's: TEAK

Why do you offer other wood furniture besides Teak if Teak is so superior?

We are committed to offering our consumer's choice and taste. Every person has different taste toward what they desire in furniture and this includes outdoor furniture. Base on our experiences, our taste are change along with our age, style, and way of life. Since we supply in all different level of markets with different kind of taste, we have to assure that we can cover all markets. Our other furniture is in no way inferior to our Teak furniture with the exception that TEAK is well known as the BEST selection for outdoor furniture based on the inherent, natural qualities of TEAK and not based on individual preferences.

10. What is so special about outdoor furniture made of Teak wood and not some other wood?

Nothing complements a beautiful garden like a teak garden bench. And few things allow a family or group of friends to enjoy the experience of the garden better than a teak table and chairs. Wood has a natural ability to coordinate with a natural setting -- teak, in particular, can withstand the elements and age with grace. Teak is the absolute best for outdoor furniture because it is one of the hardest, strongest and most durable of all timbers; densely grained, with has a very high oil content. This combination makes it extremely resistant to rot and parasites, splintering, warping, shrinking, fungus, termites and marine borers, and it weathers evenly in the sun to a soft, distinguished silvery gray that requires no preservative treatments.

11. Where does the teak used in your furniture come from?

The Teak used in our furniture is beautifully crafted of Grade A, plantation grown premier quality Javanese Tectona Grandis teak timers. Our teak is kiln dried prior to production, and pieces are crafted with mortise and tenon joinery with locking wood dowels. Unlike the many types of tropical hardwood available today mistakenly called "Teak", Tectona Grandis has superior qualities of grain, oil, color, strength and durability. Plantation-grown Javanese teak Teak is also a renewable resource.

12. Is the teak used in your furniture grown accordance with sustainability practices?

Our Teak plantation sources are in full accordance with the Indonesia government agency, PT Perhutani, which is responsible for managing this resource according to sustained-yield practice. Plantation-grown Javanese teak Teak is also a renewable resource, with nearly nine times more wood planted each year than is harvested. True teak, unlike its many less expensive imitators, cannot grow in tropical rain forests and is grown instead in the dry highlands of Java.

13. Why is Teak furniture more expensive than other hardwood furniture on the market?

There are a number of cheaper hardwoods used for outdoor furniture and all of them are inferior to teak. Jarrah and Shorea are the most common of these woods and it do not have the same life expectancy as teak, let alone the same touch, feel or aesthetic quality. Teak furniture is not expensive when you relate the cost to its life expectancy, you must remember this when comparing prices. You are not comparing like with like when you compare teak with any other wood. It is a strange anomaly that despite the fact it is built to endure decades outside in harsh weather our furniture is less expensive than some quality indoor chairs and tables.

14. Are less expensive items in the range as good quality as the more expensive?

Generally price is dictated by the shape and weight of a piece of furniture. The more shape a piece has, the more wood is required to make it along with taking more time to create. Also the heavier the sections of wood used means more weight and thus more cost. No matter which piece of furniture you choose, you can be assured that the same quality teak and standard of workmanship is used along with the same methods of manufacture and assembly.

15. Why does teak turn gray?

Teak gets its silver-gray patina from the oil in the wood. Over time (12 - 24 months depending on geography), the oil within the teak will rise to the surface. The ultra-violet rays from the sun oxidize the oil and turn it a silvery gray, buttery texture. Thus the patina you see on teak is not the wood changing color, it is the oil within the teak. Since all woods contain oil (to differing degrees), they will change color over time, but not necessarily as elegantly as teak. Teak will maintain this texture for generations to come.

16. Should I keep the furniture indoors during the winter months?

There is no problem wintering furniture outside as outdoor endurance is also one of the finer qualities of Teak although it may need a washing down in spring before use. If you prefer to bring to bring your furniture indoors, our range of folding tables and chairs are perfect for indoor furniture and can be easily tucked away when not in use.

17. How do I remove Spills, Stains, Chips and Scratches?

Most drinks stains will weather out naturally or can be cleaned down with soapy water and a hard brush. Other damage or stains can be removed quite simply using ordinary sandpaper being sure to work only with the direction of the timber grain. The grade of sandpaper depends on the degree of damage. Serious damage, start with course and move up to fine. Light damage, fine grade is all you will need. Stains usually disappear with a light sanding. After sanding stains away like this, if the furniture was previously teak oiled you may wish to re-oil, or if it had previously been left natural, the fresh teak color exposed by sanding will soon mellow in with the existing silver gray patina.

18. My weathered furniture has green stains. What is the best way to clean it?

Outdoor furniture made of teak will last for years without any attention, however, sap, pollen, chemicals or contaminants in the air, can affect its appearance. If your Teak furniture requires cleaning this can be done with a normal household bristle brush [not too hard] and some warm mildly soapy water. Wash down afterward with clean water. There are also proprietary cleaners on the market which can also be used to clean off various deposits and accumulated dirt and stains. We do not recommend the use of high pressure hoses, and steel wool or steel wire brushes should not be used at all as any residue left in the grain will rust and discolor the wood. Or you can use a Deck Cleaner purchased at your local home improvement store. Simply apply with a pump garden sprayer, let it sit for five minutes and rinse off with a garden hose. It's that easy. In a few areas, where water contains a lot of iron or other chemicals you may need to add up to 50% common household bleach to the deck cleaner. Try it first without the bleach. Stubborn stains may need a second application or scrubbed with a nylon bristle brush.

19. Why does new teak furniture sometimes have dark or orange streaks?

This coloration can result from kilning process which is used to lower the moisture content of the wood prior to manufacture. Kilning bring some natural oils to the surface of the wood causing the streaking you see. These streaks are normal and will disappear with exposure to the sun.

20. My teak has small cracks. Is it OK?

Teak is a natural material and this is perfectly normal as the wood breathes and reacts to variations in the moisture content of the air. The cracking tends to appear on the end grain sections and usually happens early in the life of the furniture. Cracks appear and disappear depending on seasonal variations (this is called checking) but rarely do they affect the strength, performance or life expectancy of the item.

21. How do I care for my Teak furniture?

Outdoor furniture made of teak will last for years without any attention, however it will naturally turn a silvery gray patina with a buttery texture. If you prefer the "new" color, use a Teak protector found in most home supply stores although treating your furniture with teak oil is not necessary. It will not extend the life of your furniture and and is purely cosmetic. We do not recommend oiling your furniture unless you are prepared to do this on a regular ongoing basis.

22. Can I paint my teak furniture if I want it to be a different color?

If you would like a color instead of the soft, natural gray teak achieves on its own, we suggest you use a stain instead of paint. We currently offer color paint finishes in our Cedar line of Adirondack chairs and Adirondack footrests.

The benefits and advantages of owning Teak Furniture are rewarding.  When you purchase Teak you are helping the environment.  The resources are continuously being renewed for future generations and your Teak Furniture will last for generations so you are not contributing to the landfills every few years with your worn out, weathered, and broken lesser quality outdoor furniture.  The care of Teak is nil unless you choose to pamper it!  Your Teak furniture naturally weathers to a gray patina and ages gracefully for generations to come.  The inherent qualities of Teak, like hardness, strength and resistance, make it perfect for outdoor use.  When you relate the longevity and the outstanding qualities of Teak to other furniture,Teak furniture isn't expensive (although the upfront costs may seem like it!).  So when comparing prices to other outdoor furniture, please remember these qualities so you are comparing apples to apples, and oranges to oranges.  Otherwise, you are in essence, comparing apples to oranges.

A word of warning:
When shopping for Teak furniture, don't let low prices fool you.  Always make sure you are buying furniture made from 100% kiln dried, solid Teak wood, and not furniture made from some other wood claiming to be equivalent to Teak (such Shorea or Jarrah wood) or a combination of lesser quality woods that have not been kiln dried to resist warping and splitting.

If you're not satisfied with our product, let us know and we'll make it right.  Within 30 days, we'll gladly replace it, refund your money (excluding delivery and restocking charges*) or credit you for our other items.  After 30 days items may be exchanged for the same product or for merchandise credit.

China Cedar

This softwood specie commonly known as China Cedar (Cunninghamia Lanceolata) has been around for generations  and is a prized timber in China. China Cedar trees are native to China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam. The wood is easy to work with, versatile, and is both lightweight and durable. China Cedar has been tested and compared to its counterpart Western Red Cedar. Both share the same family characteristics.  The North American lumber industry adopted this species as Chinese cedar based on few obvious similarities to the true North American cedar.

China Cedar accepts a wide range of staining and other finished applications. Due to the tree being plantation grown (i.e. renewable resources), the environment will not be adversely affected and the trees are more closely monitored. China Cedar has been growing in popularity and is the wood of choice by many lumber companies and builders. Aside from the quality of the product, the price of the wood is lower than its counterparts as it has a short maturity cycle, allowing it to grow quicker. For every one tree harvested, two trees are planted to replace it to ensure the supply for generations to come based on practices of renewable resources.

Properties: China Cedar resembles Western Red Cedar due to its aromatic scent (which naturally repels against pests and fungus). It also resembles Douglas Fir - having very similar grain and texture.

Appearance: China Cedar is pale yellow to white in color, with reddish streaks.

Applications: Due to its being both lightweight and durable, this wood has been used in China for centuries. China Cedar is used in house building, ship building, saunas, coffins, and many other quality products. China Cedar is used both indoors and out for a wide variety of items from houses to fences, decking, furniture, lawn furniture, siding and much more.

The North American lumber industry adopted this species as Chinese cedar based on few obvious similarities to the true North American cedar. The general market must be aware that China fir is not a true cedar species, but a member of the Taxodiaceae (bald-cypress) family and identified by the scientific name Cunninghamia lanceolata.
